New Year, New Me

Happy New Year loves! Let’s start 2025 on a positive note. I don’t know what this year has in store but I’m excited to see what happens in the book, beauty, and pop culture worlds.

Books: My Bookish Goals for 2025

2024 was the first year I hadn’t worked in a bookstore in seven years, but that didn’t stop me from visiting as many as I could. I haven’t done an actual financial breakdown of how many books I purchased last year but I know it was way too many. Much more than I could read or had the time to read. I had a desire to consume and I want to do less of that in all areas of my life. Every year I list out my goals in various areas of my life so I want to share my bookish goals with you all. Here are my six goals:

  1. Read 50 books  - I set this goal every year and never hit it. I was thinking of lowering the goal to 30 books a year, but I still have a deep desire to read and finish a book a week even if I haven’t done so yet.

  1. Read more, buy less. - I have so many unread books on my shelves and I would like to change this. The high I get from buying books is great, but only lasts a short amount of time. I want to find more satisfaction by the act of actual reading.

  1. Write a review for each book I read - I created a new book journal and plan to chronicle each book I’m reading by taking notes and writing a review for it, even if I don’t share my review with others. I want to get better at writing book reviews overall and the more I write them the better they will become.

  1. Get and use a library card - Sadly, I don’t have a library card. After years of working at a bookstore I didn’t need one even though I know it’s always good to have. This year I want to get one and utilize it for ebooks. This way I won’t have to worry about returning books in-person and I always have access to new titles without feeling the need to go to the bookstore.

  1. Follow a book purchasing budget of $50 per month - One of my overall goals is to create a weekly budget and this is a bullet point in that plan. I overspent on books in 2024 and I don’t want to do that again. In order to be more intentional around my book buying, I find $50 being enough to keep the purchases to around 2 physical books per month. I am hoping this will lead me down a path of not purchasing books every month and will encourage me to read more of what I already own.

  1. Join a book club - I discussed this with my therapist about doing more things for myself and joining a book club came up. I used to host a book club that I ended in 2023 and while I don’t intend on hosting another anytime soon, I do miss getting together with other people to read and discuss a new book. I’m only having trouble selecting a club to choose because I don’t like the upcoming book selections I’m seeing. Sorry!

Beauty: Focusing More on Skincare - A Bitch is Aging

Over the last few months, I’ve noticed more freckles and sun spots under my eyes that weren’t there the year before. The skin under my eyes is getting darker although I’ve always had puffy under eyes since highschool. They disappeared two weeks after I graduated undergrad. I finally got adequate sleep and was stress-free for three months before grad school where they came back and have been here ever since.

If you’re reading this letter I’m sure you’re into wearing sunscreen everyday. Up until now, I felt that was the only way I’d be caught slipping, but now I’m starting to feel as if my skincare routine is completely inadequate. I’ve always gotten compliments on my skin, and still do, but now that I see a few changes in my face it’s starting to hit me that I’m aging and I deserve to take better care of myself. I’m not afraid of getting older. I see getting older as a blessing, however, I can admit to myself when my habits need to change since my skin is changing.

Late last year I decided to try the Inn Beauty Project Extreme Cream and loved the glow and firmness it gave my skin. After seeing a trusted makeup artist use it, I decided to splurge. The only downside is the refill being $40 and me forgetting to get it on sale while I could. I bought a drugstore replacement and I can see where my skin lacks the luster and smoothness it got from the extreme cream. So instead of tons of makeup purchases this year, I want to make sure I have an adequate skincare routine. One that isn’t too many steps but still makes me feel good. I can also start by washing my face every night. (Go ahead, judge me, but I only wash my face at night when I wear makeup knowing good and well I should do it every night). I have a Sephora gift card that’s burning a hole into my pocket and I’m excited to go into this next phase of my beauty life. And if these prices get outrageous like folks are predicting, I’ll have to try the Noxzema and Vaseline method my great aunts used.

Pop Culture - January 14th Can’t Come Soon Enough

The Beyoncé Bowl was everything!! I had no problem with my Dad requesting the football games be on Christmas day because the Beyoncé concert was also on. Where I would have been satisfied with her having a classic stage set-up and signing Texas Hold’em for the first time on television, she gave us a full Beyoncé-style show with all the bell, whistles, and camera  tricks that I LOVE!

One of my favorite things about seeing her live is looking at the big screens around the stadium to see what special effects she added for those who can’t get the best view of the stage. She knew the majority of her fans would be watching from home and that was the best view of the show. The My House set was my absolute favorite part. When she released that song, I thought it was good, but nothing special. I understood her wanting to release a song around the Renaissance movie release, but didn’t see its purpose until it made for the perfect transition during her halftime performance.

I thought that was enough until I opened my Instagram directly after the show to see her post about 1.14.25. Of course we don’t know what she’s releasing, but the Beyhive is pretty sure its the highly anticipated, never confirmed, ACT lll album. Will this be the rock album of my dreams? I never knew I had dreams about a rock album before she was rumoured to be creating one. It could also be a concert announcement but I’m hoping it’s not. I need to get my finances straight and I’ll be scraping together ticket money for her and Kendrick in the same year. If she truly loves us, it will be an album or the visuals we keep begging for. Beyoncé, if you’re reading this, or you’re lovely folks at Parkwood, please be nice to us. Give us ACT lll on January 14th.

Thanks for reading!

Love,
